Text source

Mr Stoneage was a merchant travelling around Germany in the late 1680s. He knew Mungo English [SSNE 7070], Mr Elliot [SSNE 7127] and Mr Hume [SSNE 7126]. He appears to have travelled with these men for some parts of 1689. English frequently signed off his letters to Andrew Russell [SSNE 143] with a note that Stonedge sends his regards. On 22 January 1690, English told Russell that he intended to move to the Dutch Republic with Stonedge in early February, but they were still in the city on the 14th of that month. In several of Mungo English's letters he talks of Mr Walter Scott in Wauchope in terms of being party to bills of exchange. He calls this man "Stonedge's chamberlain"

National Archives of Scotland, Russell Papers, RH 15/106/689. Various letters of Mungo English to Andrew Russell (1689); RH15/106/710/13. Mungo English to Andrew Russell, 22 January 1690.
