William Stewart was a Scotsman in Swedish service. Fischer noted him as a colonel serving in Monnichhofen's regiment, and who died in 1613. He would have been actively serving during the Swedish-Danish/Norwegian Kalmar war of 1611-1613. He was thus serving despite King James VI and I's ban on Scots enlisting for Sweden against Denmark-Norway
