Captain James Forbes, 2nd Laird of Blacktoun received permission from Charles I to raise a company of 200 men for service in Russia. James Forbes served under Alexander Leslie of Auchintoul [SSNE 2916] and took part in the Smolensk War. In some sources it is erroneously cited that his permission was to raise a regiment and had the rank of colonel. He is sometimes confused with James Forbes [SSNE 3881], his cousin.
