WEMYSS, DAVID [SSNE 6960]
Text source
David Wemyss, a Dundee merchant-burgess, was sent to Gothenburg in 1654. John Maclean [SSNE 1631] was owed by the British crown, since 1650, 16,030 riksdaler (accrued with interest at 8 percent) - ca.4-5,000 pounds. As Charles II and the parliament could not satisfy Maclean with the sum, they presented him with an act of Parliament and a public bond of the kingdom of Scotland. Maclean specified that he wanted the Great Seal of Scotland on the bond and Weymeys promised to produce the bond within 6 months, or be subject to a penalty of 5000 riksdaler himself.
