CROMARTIE, THOMAS [SSNE 6857]
Text source
Thomas Cromartie was a merchant burgess of Bergen from 1599. His father [SSNE 6887] had also been a burgess of the town. Thomas served as a town councillor from 1617. Thomas formed part of an Orcadian community in the town as his neighbours were James Anderson Dishingtun [SSNE 5200] and Thomas Quoybanks [SSNE 4507] who both witnessed his sale of land. In addition, Cromartie's cousin William [SSNE 6889] was also in Bergen. Thomas had a house and warehouses at the harbour (on the southwest of Bergen's Vaag) which were later inherited by his son, Daniel. He signed a disposition in 1640 to William Stewart of Mains, of a farthing udal land in Kirk, South Ronaldsay, Orkney with sasine. Thomas died in 1647. His grandson, Thomas Danielsen, was a sailmaker and merchant and his probate records are substantial.
