Richard Daniel was an Englishman engaged in trade at Riga on behalf of the English Admiralty in the 1670s. The British envoy to Sweden, Philip Warwick [SSNE 1125] interceded on his behalf with King Karl XI of Sweden i February 1681, although this was not the first time Warwick had considered Daniel's case. Apparently since 1677 the Riga magistrates were trying to force Daniel to become a burgess of the town as Daniel had married the daughter of a burgess there. The Swedish envoy at Riga, Leyonberg had already been approached by King Charles II over the issue at the time, and he subsequently communicated with the Governor-General of Livonia. Although the Governor-General had commanded the Riga magistrates to leave Daniel alone, this had never been officially condoned by Karl XI of Sweden and thus the Riga magistrates continued to behave as they wanted. The previous British envoy to Sweden, Edward Wood [SSNE 4440] had also been engaged in this matter. The final outcome of this issue has not yet been discovered
