ANDERSON, JAMES [SSNE 6722]
Text source
James Anderson lived and died in Danzig. After his death on 27 March 1658, 3 florins were spent on summoning members of the Scottish community to his funeral which took place three days later. Two meals were held that day in his memory. One for all journeymen to Scottish merchants and one for close family and friends. Both meals are sumptuously described in Maria Bogucka's article referenced below. Anderson left some property in his room which included valuables, musical instruments, weapons and a carriage; more goods than he could use to furnish his small rented room. These are taken as evidence that he not only traded on behalf of a merchant, but also engaged in some trade on his own right. It is not known if he was related to or the same man as either SSNE 5621 or SSNE 5874 who share his name but are recorded elsewhere in the CommonwealthM. Bogucka, 'Scots in Gdansk (Danzig) in the Seventeenth Century' in A. I. Macinnes, T. Riis and F. G. Pedersen (eds.), Ships Guns and Bibles in the North Sea and the Baltic States, c.1350-c.1700 (East Linton, 2000), pp.42-43.
