William Ross was a lieutenant in Colonel Otto Urne's dragoons from June 1657. He was paid off in March 1658. When war reinitiated in autumn that year Ross was a 1st lieutenant in the Totenske company of Skinckel's dragoons. In May 1659 he was a lieutenant captain in the Lifecompany, and by December he was captain and chief of the same. He along with Hamilton [SSNE 294] formed part of the Norwegian flank, supporting the army and preventing the Swedes from gaining ground. From January 1660 he was in charge of 102 dragoons at Unneberg and then in February, at Borge church, he led 4 dragoon companies along with Hamilton's 4 cavalry companies where they were again victorious over the Swedes. He left service in May 1660. He may later have served as a captain in the Landdragoon of Sonderfjeld from November 1665 until November the following yearO.
