John Forbes was the son of Alexander Forbes of Boyndie in Aberdeenshire. He was a merchant and a member of the Aberdeen Lodge of Freemasons. He may have been a Quaker. John emmigrated to America in 1684 and settled in Perth Amboy in Jersey. He apparently returned two years later and had a military rank of captain.
