James Ross was a skipper and a burgess of Bergen, Norway. In 1639 he received a pass from King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway to continue his trade. He obtained it in respect of his 27 years of activity as an international skipperNorske Rigsregistranter, vol.6 (1877), pp.525-6.
