Thomas Sterling, a Scottish merchant from Lublin, held the rank of captain and commanded a company composed of 200 other Scots (mostly merchants) recruited from the community in Poland-Lithuania. They fought to relieve Zbaraz in 1649. The whole company were then killed in a disaster at Zborow trying to secure a ford on the river Strypa (15 August 1649)
