Patrick Smyth was the son of Patrick Smyth the elder of Braco [SSNE 6893] who was a merchant engaged in cloth and beer trade. Smyth the younger was engaged in trade and in March 1646 he wrote his father from Wakefield explaining that the poor markets had delayed his return home and that he was therefore headed south to London to sell linen. Smyth the younger fell in with Alexander Johnstone of Edinburgh who worked in the cloth trade in Danzig. On 9 September 1647 he wrote a letter to Smyth the elder confirming that he had employed his son in Danzig in the same profession. He wrote to Smyth the elder again on 23 November that year from Edinburgh confirming: "I hav receavit ane letter fra your sone laittlie fra Dansisk giving me notice of his health prosperitie and good furnessing all his proceidings in my effeires".
