Johan Ennes was the son of John Innes who had left Scotland as a religious refugee in 1580. John had settled in Emden in Ostfreisland where he died in the early 1600s. Johan who was born in Emden in 1600 and changed his name to Ennes and left for Sweden in the 1630s where he became a merchant in Helsingborg. He was married to Catharina Hoffmans and they had a son, also called Johan. Johan snr died in 1658.
