Johan Adolf Maclean was baptised on 3 September 1694. He was the son of David Maclean [SSNE 3023] and his wife, Eleonora Elisabet von Ascheberg. He was baptised on 3 September 1694 and his godparents did not include any from the Scottish/British community in Gothenburg. His siblings were Rutger [SSNE 6096], Johan Philip [SSNE 6954], Magdalena Eleonora [SSNE 6953], Jacob Ludwig [SSNE 6956] and Marianna [SSNE 6957].
John Adolf volunteered for service in the Bohuslän Dragoons in March 1710. He later became a lieutenant in the Vestgöta regiment and a captain in the Lifeguard. Johan left service on 11 August 1741 and died in Stockholm in 1746. He married Sophia Louisa Leijonhufvud. There is a portrait of Johan by J.D. Swartz from 1728. Although this belongs to the Nationalmuseum, the portrait is on long-term loan to the Royal Lifeguards where it hangs in the Officers' Mess at their HQ at Kungsängen
