Text source
Robert Crichton was a captain of horse in Swedish service from 1568-1570 during the end of King Erik XIV's reign, when his brother who became king Johan III instigated a rebellion with the help of the third brother duke Karl. Many Scottish soldiers and officers were engaged in the Swedish armies at this time. In typical fashion, Crichton remained in Sweden after his period of active service. In November 1573 master treasurer Mats Bengtson declared before the Stockholm magistrates that he had paid the back salary owed to David Crichton (probably Robert's brother or relative)[SSNE 6663]. Robert signed for the money. In that year a Robert Crichton appears in the Stockholmsstads Tankeboker on behalf of David Crichton.G. Arteus, Till Militärstatens Förhistoria: Krig, professionalisering och social förändring under Vasasönernas regering (Stockholm, 1986), p.170; J.
