William Patrick Barclay was the son of John Barclay [SSNE 1937/9?] and he enrolled at Uppsala University with his brothers Gustav [SSNE 558], John [SSNE 549] and Carl Magnus [SSNE 561]. He entered military service as a pikeman with Deling's Skane regiment in 1663. In the army he became a cornett with Colonel Kock's squadron and a lieutenant with the Uppland regiment in 1672. Barclay later also served as a lieutenant with Wittenberg's Smaland cavalry before becoming a master of horse. Barclay married Maria Furmark
