Carl Leonard Maclean was the third son of Johan Maclean [SSNE 4205] and his wife Anna Gordon. He was baptised on 14 August 1676 in Gothenburg. He entered military service by becoming a volunteer for Prince Karl's lifeguards on 7 February 1694. Two years later he was a sergeant-major and he became an ensign on 3 January 1697. The following year he got permission to journey abroad for a year, although it is not clear if he returned to Scotland, his parents country of birth. On his return, Maclean joined the Smaland Infantry regiment as a captain on 13 August 1700, where he was still registered in 1706. In 1725 he got permission to visit Britain with his wife, to lay claim to a family legacy. He had married Anna Hirscheit or Hirschen around 1700, who was the daughter of a Gothenburg merchant, and they had 5 children together. She died on 4 March 1765. Carl Leonard was buried on 5 May 1747 at Tolo.
