On 2 January 1583 King Stephen of Poland officially granted 8 Scotsmen the freedom to ply their trade for the Polish court. This was given in recognition of the Scots merchants' service to the court, which was engaged in a hostile campaign against Muscovy. Thomas Roplandtt was one of these Scots
