GORDON, GILBERT [SSNE 5299]
Text source
Gilbert Gordon is an interesting individual in the study of the Scots abroad. He took his name from his mother's first husband rather than his own father. Gilbert Sanderson Gordon had followed in his father's trade and became a burgess cooper of Bergen, admitted on 3 March 1687. He married Maren Knutsdatter and with her had two children, Elizabeth and Rachel Gilbertsdatter Gordon before his death in 1691. When Gilbert died, Maren married Zacharias Olsen and had a son whom she called Gilbert Gordon rather than Gilbert Olsen or Zachariasen. It is not known why this was the case, but may have been to do with the family buisiness, an inheritance stipulation or the undying love of Maren for her first husband! Gilbert 'Zachariasen' Gordon died in 1725Bergen Statsarkiv, Sollied Archive, Gordon section and index cards.
