SCOT, JOHN [SSNE 5137]
Text source
On 3 April 1671 John Scot, a barber, supplied a birth-brieve and was made a citizen of Cracow. He paid nothing as he was recognised for his diligence on behalf of those suffering from the plague. Indeed, Scot discovered symptoms of the disease on the basis of post-mortem examinations and managed to localise the spread of the infection. The surgeons also accepted him as a member of their guild. Bieganska gives the date of the plague as between 1677-1679, but the same information relating to his statusA.F. Steuart, Papers Relating to the Scots in Poland 1576-1793, Edinburgh, 1915, p.55; Lib. Jur. Civ. Crac. Cath. Tert. Ord. 1678; A.
