George Ramsay of Carriden, 3rd son of the Earl of Dalhousie, entered Dutch service in 1676. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on 10 September 1689. Ramsay led Wauchope's regiment of infantry during the Scottish campaign of William of Orange in 1689. According to Balfour Paul he then made a leap in rank to Brigadier by 1 January 1690 after which he left Dutch service. See Sir James Balfour Paul, The Scots Peerage (8 vols., 1904-1911), III, p.101.
