David Colyear [aka Robertson] received his commission as a captain in the Dutch Brigade on 10 February 1625. He already served as Chamberlain to the Prince of Orange by that date. On 9th July 1649 he became serjeant-major in Sir William Drummond's regiment. Colyear married Jean Bruce of Airth before September 1643. They had 3 daughters and one son, Colonel Alexander Robertson [aka Colyear].
