Text source

Captain Henry Balfour was the brother of Michael, 1st Lord Burleigh and is often confused with Captain Henry Balfour, the son of Colonel Balfour with whom he was in service at the same time. He first served as a captain around 1599 and in 1611 he petitioned for a lt. colonelcy or a sergeant-majorship. In 1611 he is called Sir Henry Balfour by the British Ambassador and also had the recommendation of Princess Elizabeth Stuart, future Queen of Bohemia. He was dead before 4 August 1615 and left a widow, Maria de Leon [a.k.a. van Leeuwan], who appeared in the pension lists of 1618. See J. Ferguson, Papers Illustrating the History of the Scots Brigade in theservice of the United Netherlands,1572-1697 (Edinburgh, 1899), pp.43-5, 61.
