James Douglas received his commission on 15 December 1674, replacing lt.-colonel Mackay. On 5th November 1676 he became sergeant-major for the regiment. Two years later, on 15 January 1678, he received his promotion to lt.-colonel. He became Colonel for his regiment on 22 March 1680 when he took over from Alexander Colyear. Douglas was granted permission to recruit in Scotland by the Privy Council on 9 March 1682. In February 1685 the Privy Council ordered £400 Sterling to be sent to Douglas in the Netherlands in part payment for arms provided there upon his credit.
