Captain John Hamilton was one of several officers of that name in the Scots Brigade. This individual was killed at the batle of Newport/Nieuport [1600] while commanding his Cornet of Cavalry in the decisive action of the battle. Hamilton had previously been riding with Sir Edward Cecil and according to Cecil he made "the gallantest retreat I ever heard of". He had the duty of guarding the rear with a body of Nassau's Dutch horse. In order to make sure they got away, Hamilton went to the very back to skirmish with the Spaniards. His horse was killed but he still managed to fight his way out on foot.J.
