Baron Hugo Johan Hamilton (c.1660-1748) was the son of Malcolm Hamilton Baron of Hageby [SSNE 2605] and Christina Maclean, daughter of John Maclean of Gothenburg [SSNE 1631] and widow of Colonel David Sinclair. Hugo Johan started his military career as an ensign in the Elfsborg regiment in 1683. He was variously promoted through the ranks of the lifeguard and life dragoons before becoming Colonel of the Ostgota Cavalry and Major General of Cavalry in 1708. He was captured at Poltava in June 1709 but promoted in exile to Lt-General of Cavalry from 1720, returned to Sweden in 1722 and made Field marshall in 1734. He died in 1748. He married in 1699 to Eva Catherina Falkenberg and later Anna Fleming of Luberlitz (1682-1758), Lady in Waiting to the Queen of Sweden. With her he had several children.
