Jakob Boij was the son of Andrew Boij [SSNE 4344] and his wife Maria Grooth. In September 1658, Jakob studied at Uppsala University and by 1674 he acted as a commissioner on the College of Commerce (Kammarkollegium). His brother Anton [SSNE 4771] was a factory owner and favourite of Karl XI.
