John Stuart entered Danish service by 1627, as by 16 November that year his claim for payment of stipend was to be considered. He appears to have been in Colonel Donald Mackay's [SSNE 93] regiment. He was transferred to the Scanian National Foot as captain over a company, with a stipend paid for the period 15 February to 28 October 1628
