Valdemar Gustaf Low was the son of the Englishman Francis Low [SSNE 1953] who became ennobled in 1680. He was a volunteer in Pistoleker's regiment in 1681. The next year he was a master of arms, and in 1683 he was a 'forare' and a sergeant. Ten years later he was an adjutant lieutenant. In 1694 he was a lieutenant at the fortifications. In 1695 he was in Stockholm. He was serving in the Livonian army by 1700, where he rose to captain in 1701 and major in 1705. When Livonia fell to the Russians he stayed there.
