William Mackay was a son of Donald Mackay of Scourie. He served in Danish service from 15/10/1627, and was reformed in 1629. Mackay was appointed to the rank of lieutenant after Andrew Morton in the winter of 1628-9. He later transferred to Sweden with the rank of captain and became a lieutenant colonel soon after. He was killed in action at Lutzen in 1632.
