John Innes was the son of William Innes of Sandside. He entered Danish-Norwegian service and served as an ensign in Colonel Donald Mackay's [SSNE 93] regiment. He was wounded in action at Stralsund in 1628, and according to some sources, killed there. He had been appointed lieutenant after 4/10/1628. A certian Thomas Sinclair narrated that as a captain he was taken prisoner in Prussia but escaped through a moor and as a result was made major in 1631. Also according to him, in 1632 Innes was a lieutenant-colonel of foot in Swedish service. This Swedish service is yet to be verified.
