William Gilford was an Englishman in Swedish naval service during the second half of the seventeenth century. On 30 December 1664 a certificate was issued confirming that 'William Gilford had been a captain in the King of Sweden's service against the Hollander and master of several merchantmen for eight years'. The following year in January his Trinity House master's certificate was issued, on the 14th, and on the 25th Robert Turner and Thomas Broockes corroborated Gilford's longstanding status as both a captain in Swedish service and master of merchant shipsCalendar of State Papers Domestic, Charles II Addenda 1660-1685, pp.120, 124, 125; see also State Papers Supplementary 136, no.s 242, 267 and 271.
