BUTTS, DANIEL [SSNE 4428]
Text source
Daniel Butts served as the British consul in Christiania between 1685-8 while working for the House of Stuart. A fresh ste of credentials were issued for him by William of Orange and Mary Stuart as British consul for the English, Scottish and Irish nations, dated at Whitehall, 24 May 1689. In a letter from the king in Copenhagen, the Norwegians were informed of the appointment, but the letter has perhaps been misdated as the date reads 25 November 1699 in the printed version. Some of his letters survive in the Sloane Collection.British Library, Additional Manuscripts of the Sloane Collection 41829. Vol. XXVII (ff. 265). (1) Letters from Dan[iel] Butts, Consul at Christiania, to Lord Middleton and Dr Owen Wynne, 20 Sept. 1686- 25 Aug. 1688. ff. 1-47. (2) Correspondence and papers rel. to a projected treaty of commerce between England (sic) and Denmark, including the English proposals and the Danish counter-project, with comments of various individuals and bodies, 1685-1688. At f. 58 is a list, in the hand of Dr Owen Wynne, of certain papers delivered to Ri[chard] Warre, [Under-Secretary of State], 6 April 1689, with the latter's signed receipt. ff. 48-265.
