Thomas Bodley was educated at Geneva and Oxford. He was usher to the queen amongst other duties. He was engaged on missions to Denmark in 1585. During this visit he also visited the Duke of Brunswick. In 1588 he was sent to Henry III of France. In 1589-96 he was the queen's permanent resident in the Dutch Republic.
