John Deane was a son of Sir Anthony Deane, Carles II's eminant shipbuilder. He is said to have been in Russia as a Royal shipbuilder from 1698, but is perhaps confused with his uncle of the same name. Deane was the first 'British' shipbuilder to enter Russian service along with Joseph Nye. He wrote a famous letter, subsequently published, from Moscow in 1698.
