KINNAIRD, JOHN [SSNE 4168]
Text source
Hans (John) Kinnaird is listed as "from Holland" in some Swedish sources, although it's unknown whether he was born there or migrated from Scotland to Holland before coming to Sweden. He was a ship's captain in Swedish service by 1639. His correspondence can be found in 'Biografiska' from 1643. He captained Vesterviks Fortuna in Admiral Flemming's fleet in 1644 and took part in the battle at Kolberger Heide. In 1646 he observed that his father had also been in Swedish naval service and at the same rank indicating a second Captain Kinnaird in the navy. Between 14/4/1652 and 1658 he was Commander for Västgöta Båtsmanskompani. In 1658 (one source says September 1657) he became a major, and noted as "Vice Admiral" at the Gothenburg naval station. He died on 6 May 1658.
