Thomas Mackinnon was an officer in the Russian army from 1632 to 1634. In the Russian military records he was noted as a "boyar's son from the town of Tenriros" - thus a nobleman from Tain in Ross. He arrived in Moscow from Pskov with other Scottish officers and probably fought at Smolensk
