Text source
In the 1570s during the Livonian War, a Scots corps under Colonel Ruthven fought for Sweden against Russia. Some, at least 85 in number, were taken prisoners, brought to Moscow and entered the Tsar's employ. Jamie "a valiant and honest man" was appointed captain over his compatriots and led them in battles against Crimean Tartars. "Then had they pensions and lands allowed them to live upon, married and matched with the fair Livonian women, increased into families and lived in favor of the prince and people"J.W. Barnhill and P. Dukes, 'North-east Scots in Muscovy in the seventeenth century' in Northern Scotland, vol. 1, no. 1, 1972, pp.50-51.
