Alexander Hamilton was the eldest son of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Fenton and Innerwick, East Lothian, (known in Scotland as 'Dear Sandy') [SSNE 380]. He served as a lieutenant colonel in Russia during the 1660s and obtained a birth-brief from the Privy Council of Scotland in 1670. In 1681 he was back in Scotland and petitioned for the rank of major in the militia.
