John Carmichael of Howgate, near Edinburgh, was uncle to Sir John Carmichael of Hyndford, Warden of the Scottish March. Carmichael of Howgate became a 'General' under Ivan the Terrible. In 1570 he found himself in command of 5,000 men during the Livonian war, and later he became Governor of Pskov.
