John Carmichael of Howgate, near Edinburgh, was uncle to Sir John Carmichael of Hyndford, Warden of the Scottish March. Carmichael of Howgate became a 'General' under Ivan the Terrible. In 1570 he found himself in command of 5,000 men during the Livonian war, and later he became Governor of Pskov.D. Fedosov, The Caledonian Connection (Aberdeen, 1996).
