Herman Spalding was the grandson of Johan Spalding [SSNE 4677] and son of Gabriel Spalding [SSNE 4816] and his wife Katarina Schmidt. He was born on 6 March 1671 and had joined the army by 1688. He became a sergeant in Prins Karl's lifregiment in 1689 and served thereafter as an ensign in the Alvsborg regiment by 07/10/1691. He thereafter spent some time in Dutch service (until November 1695), before returning to the Liferegiment in 1697. Spalding hoped to travel to Livonia in 1701 in order to observe the ongoing military operations there. After being made Regimental Quartermaster in 1701, Herman became a major in the Alvsborg regiment by 1712. In 1713 he sought free travel and leave for one captain Karl Mannercrantz. He was captured at Tönningen and was made prisoner. He returned home in late 1715 but was killed at Frederikshall on 24 June 1716, with his brother Johan [SSNE 6874] according to Eduard Spalding. He died unmarried. His other sibblings included Johanna Beata [SSNE 6418] and Michael [SSNE 6109]Swedish Riksarkiv, Ericsbergsarkivet, Autografsamlingen, vol.195; Göteborg Landsarkiv (GLA) Förteckning över Landshövdingens i Göteborg och Bohus Län - Skrivelser till Kungl.
