RAMSAY, JAMES [SSNE 3316]
Text source
James Ramsay was one of several Scotsmen of that name who served in the Swedish army during the 1620s-30s. He was a lieutenant in James Spens' [SSNE 1642] regiment from 1625-1630, and then a captain in Alexander/John Hamilton's [SSNE 380] regiment from 1630-1632. This regiment transferred to the command of Ludowick Leslie [SSNE 396] and took part in the battle of Lutzen. This is possibly the same as James Ramsay the Fair [SSNE 6657]. If so then it was he who became Governor of Brissac in Germany, possibly between 1631-1632Swedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll, 1625/3; 1629/22; 1632/30; James Grant, The Memoirs and Adventures of Sir John Hepburn (Edinburgh, 1851) p.254.
