Colonel John Pringle joined Swedish service c.1619. He is probably the same man who was wounded in action at Stralsund 1628 in the Danish army (some Scots volunteered to help the Scottish regiments in Danish service and transferred briefly). He received his reckoning from Danish service by 18/10/1628. Pringle then appeared in Donald Mackay's regiment in Sweden in 1630 adding weight to the theory that it was the same officer. He became a reformed fanrik in John Hamilton's recruited regiment in 1632, and so he probably served at Lutzen when the regiment came under the command of Ludovick Leslie [SSNE 396]. He later served in David Drummond's recruited regiment. In 1649 he wrote to Prince Karl Gustaf (later Karl X) where he noted his 30 years of service to the Swedish Crown. He went on to serve as a colonel under Karl X and letters from the 1656-9 period from him to the King survive in the archives.
