James Ogilvie was born on 27 October 1671 in Kalmar. He served first as an NCO at the age of 22 in the Riga garrison in 1691 and then as a sergeant by 1693. He appears to have been ennobled by the age of 27. Ogilvie had several promotions before becoming a grenadier ensign in Erik Soop's recruited infantry regiment by 1700. He later transferred to Frolich's regiment and became a captain of horse in the Norskånska cavalry. He transferred to the Livregiment till Häst in 1704 and served as general adjutant of Flgeln in August 1706. He died in November 1708.
