William Monipenny was first in Patrick Ruthven's [SSNE 3413] Kalmar regiment in 1626, then in James Spens'[SSNE 1642] regiment in 1629. In January that year a report by Spens recording his captains notes that William was stationed at Dunaburg. A Sergeant Major Monipenny in Sir John Hepburn's [SSNE 2660] regiment commanded at Oxenfurt and saw of a much larger force under General Tilly in 1631. Monipenny appears to have served into the 1640's when he transferred over to Gordon's Narke och Varmlands regiment in April 1647 (Nordernsvan says 1645). He was the brother of Peter Monipenny [SSNE 3107] and nephew of Sir James Spens [SSNE 1642]. In 1645 he and Peter asked Colonel Hugh Hamilton [SSNE 2582] to cover the 300 rdl cost of the burial of their cousin, Cecilia Spens Drummond [SSNE 6129]. William married a sister of Cecilia, possibly Isabella [SSNE 6263] - the widow of Sir James Ramsay [SSNE 3315], though this remains speculative.
