David King was the second son of David King of Warbester from Hoy in Orkney. He was also the brother of General James King [SSNE 2814], also of Swedish service. David King was in Fritz Rosladin's cavalry company until 1629. King then transferred into Hans Wrangel's squadron before becoming a captain in John Ruthven's [SSNE 191] regiment. He was promoted to Sergeant Major soon after.
