ROBERTSON, JOHN [SSNE 2798]
Text source
Captain John Robertson appears in Danish-Norwegian service as a naval captain and vice-commandant of the royal fortifications in Altafjord in Norway in 1611-1613. He arrived with another Scot, Captain Tamis Cunningham [SSNE 2472] who acted as Commandant. They had a small fleet of Galley’s to protect the fjord and surrounding area from attack by the Swedes. This is probably the same man as Captain Hans Robertson of Scotland, noted as a citizen of Oslo, who was wounded while serving in Danish-Norwegian military service. King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway awarded him 40 rigsdaler per annum according to the letter header, although the text itself only refers to 24 rigsdaler to be paid to Robertson from AkershusNorske Rigsregistranter, vol.4, (1870), p.505; O. Solberg, Finnmark Omkring 1700, Tredie Bind: Lilienskiolds Speculum Boreale, Del II (Oslo, 1945), p.61; J. P. Nielsen, Altas Historie, Bind I: De glemte århundrene 1520-1826 (Alta, 1990), p.102.
