Hugh Duncan was listed as an Irish officer in 1676 who had served the Danish-Norwegian navy, but transferred to the army. During his 24 years of service, he rose from common soldier to captain. On 12/2/76 he was captain in Degenfeldt's infantry regiment, and also recruited further troops. Although he was recorded as Irish, Riis suggests he could be Scottish and he probably came from Ulster. Duncan had entered the armed forces while in his 24th yearT. Riis, Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot (Odense, 1988), II, p.86; J.C.W. Hirsch and K.
