Thomas Hamilton began his military career in Sweden in 1636, when he joined as an ensign in the Uppland regiment where he served until 1643. He is probably the same as ensign Thomas Hamilton who received permission from the military college in Stockholm to join the army and gain some active military experience in August 1642.

Hamilton became involved in a legal case in 1653-1654 over the will of Alexander Gordon which also involved Robert Buchan of Portlethen [SSNE 4928]. Hamilton acted as the executor of Gordon's will.

In 1656 he became a captain and by 1658, a major. He was major in the Jamtland regiment occupying Trondheim in Norway. In 1660 he became lieutenant colonel of the Trondheim regiment. In February 1665 he was appointed commandant of Malmo castle. In December 1669 he became commandant of Varberg castle. He was finally promoted colonel in 1673 and he died in August 1678. He married Barbara Borthwick [SSNE 8309] who survived him.
