DOUGLAS, GEORGE [SSNE 2357]
Text source
There was a captain George Douglas in colonel James Spens' [SSNE 1642] regiment in Swedish service from 1625 to 1626. In October 1627 Chancellor Oxenstierna interceded on Douglas' behalf with the treasury when the captain sought the rest of his salary. Intriguingly, the Chancellor noted that Douglas was to be paid as "a foreigner". This is probably the same Captain George Douglas who in April 1628 obtained a warrant to levy 300 soldiers in London and Westminster for Sir James Ramsay's [SSNE 3315] regiment in Prussia. He is probably the same as [SSNE 2358], noted as lieutenant in Spens' regiment in 1624, and subsequently a captain in Ramsay'sSwedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll, 1625/3,5,6; 1626/3-8; Acts of the Privy Council (England), September 1627- June 1628, pp.371-2; Rikskansleren Axel Oxenstiernas skrifter och brefvexling, first series, III, 646.
